Saving Julio

It took three people to rescue this tiny boy: one to discover him crying for help in a deep ditch, one to climb down and scoop him up, and one to pull rescuer and pup back up. He was crawling with ticks and weak from hunger after who knows how many days alone. We've placed him in foster care, debugged him, cleaned him up, gotten him started on a supplemented diet and named him Julio.

Sweet Canela
Canela means "cinnamon" and this young girl is as sweet as a cinnamon bun. Though she was malnourished and had wounds from defending herself on the streets, she hasn't lost her gentle disposition. She's so grateful to be getting fed generously and regularly, having a safe place with plenty of shade and a comfy bed. You can see her gratitude in her eyes. She'll be getting spayed soon and finishing her shots.

<![CDATA[Emaciated Hound Gets a Fresh Start]]>Wed, 23 Sep 2015 22:12:00 GMThttp://sancarlospets.com/1/post/2015/09/emaciated-hound-gets-a-fresh-start.html
When we got the call about a starving dog in the Ranchitos, we weren't prepared for just how skeletal this beagle hound was — he probably wouldn't have survived much longer. In foster care, he got a bath to remove dozens of ticks, started on meds to help him recover from the effects of those ticks, and best of all, plenty of supplemented nourishment. Even in his emaciated condition we could tell he was a handsome dog, with gorgeous amber eyes and gold and white coat.

A month later, he's getting sleek and energetic, all set for the next phase in his life: a loving new home. Talk about a transformation! Here's (drumroll) the New Improved Jack!

Pepin, the desert survivor

We'll never know his whole story, but somehow Pepin, a year-old male poodle the size of a cat ended up wandering alone in the desert for weeks. A friend of San Carlos Pet Adoption rescued him and took him home, where he was treated for several skin infections caused by more than 150 ticks.

When people talk about going to a breeder to buy a dog, I think of Pepin and so many like him (often purebreds) who desperately need a home. Adopt, don't buy your dog...please!

<![CDATA[Summer in San Carlos — not for wimps]]>Sun, 31 May 2015 14:22:18 GMThttp://sancarlospets.com/1/post/2015/05/summer-in-san-carlos-not-for-wimps.htmlPictureJoey
Many of our supporters and fosters are snowbirds who go back to the US and Canada for the summer. The few of us who remain here face 100+ temps and steamy humidity. Not for wimps.

That doesn't mean the rescues have come to a halt! In the past month we've taken in three puppies (see Adopt Me) and have facilitated a couple of adoptions. We could use a break, but we get a call every couple of days about another dog or puppy in dire circumstances, like Joey (photo). Summer is hard on homeless dogs, and when we take them in they often have special medical needs caused by malnutrition, humidity and the heat.

But the good news is that we also continue to hear from people who see our rescue dogs on Facebook, and want to contribute donations of food, toys, bedding and cash. Thank you so much for helping us make a difference in their lives.

<![CDATA[Tapas were a treat!]]>Tue, 20 Jan 2015 15:54:44 GMThttp://sancarlospets.com/1/post/2015/01/tapas-were-a-treat.htmlPictureOur new banner was finished just in time to hang it for the Yappy Tapa Hour
Our first Yappy Tapa Hour was a big hit with a full house, enjoying selections from Patrick's new tapa menu, listening to Lorena Robles' beautiful music and socializing, i.e. "yapping." That's what we invented Yappy Hours for, so people can get together, have some delicious treats with a glass of wine or beer, and spend a couple of hours with their friends and neighbors. Several people asked us to do it again, and preliminary plans are in the works to do just that.

Muchas gracias to Lorena Robles for playing for us and to Patrick for his creativity and good service.

We were actually down to one foster dog last week, an historic moment, but as always, that didn't last long. Three different litters of puppies have been brought to us, but luckily a few willing foster folks have arrived from El Norte as well, so we've found foster homes for them all. Now we're just crossing our fingers that we don't get any more for a while, because there's no more room at the inn!

Did you know that "purebreds" were mostly developed just in the past 100 years? And with the inbreeding comes severe problems such as birthing difficulties, respiratory problems, hip dysplasia...
